Judging the Angle
Kevin Phelan’s dedication and love of photography is evident as soon as you meet him. His involvement in the field spans many years and he has a amazing body of work to back up his knowledge and expertise in the field.
Kevin’s interest in photography started at an early age, using his Mother’s “Box Brownie” and like a lot of children, he tried developing black & white prints in the bathroom. He purchased his first camera when he was 16 and in 1972 purchased his first SLR camera, a Canon RM.
Now some thirty-seven years later, he has many impressive achievements. Kevin joined the Essendon Camera Club in 1985 and held the position of Club Treasurer for 14 years. Since joining the club, Kevin has also been involved in Essendon Camera Club’s well known annual ten week photography course. Kevin is not only a lecturer for the course but a part of the team that puts the course together. The course runs once a year and gives participants practical knowledge and experience in photography. Club members generously donate their time and skills, as well as making themselves available to further help students with any queries.
Kevin has enjoyed great success in club, interclub and national competition in both slides and prints, gaining merits on many occasions. Kevin's recent successes at national competitions includes:
Kevin was the recipient of the prestigious award of State Service to the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies (SSVAPS). This award is given by the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies Inc and is deemed a service award which, is given to people who have given exceptional service to photography, not only within their Club, but also service to advancing the art of photography on a much wider scale than at their own club.
Kevin was awarded a life membership of Essendon Camera Club in 1994.
Kevin has been guest speaker for many organisations, this includes: the Lions Association, the Retired Business Women's Association, church groups and many of Melbourne’s camera clubs. These camera clubs have also at various times had Kevin as a judge for their club and inter- club competitions.
In 2006 Kevin assisted the Polish Community by taking the photographs for their "Goodwill Exhibition". This exhibition toured parts of Australia.
He has been fortunate enough in the last few years to travel to many parts of our great country, Australia, and loves our landscape. Kevin’s main interests in photography are landscape, nature and sport.
