| I lived in Smith Street between 1970 and 1976 (practically all my primary school days). Memories? Kenny Park, watching Tommy Bland kicking bags of goals each week. He was my hero as a young lad and I was always going to get his autograph during school holidays when he delivered the mail but was too shy!! The swimming pool...the children's one used to have pictures of disney characters on the bottom I think...I may have remembered that incorrectly, it has been a long time!! The school as it was before it was as it is now. The bell tower in particular I remember. And the way that there would be a big puddle form outside the library every time it rained. I remember Mr. Nichols and Mr. Neville and how they used to give boys the strap (I never got it amazingly enough). I remember going to the hospital to see Mr. Nichols when he was in there shortly before he died at the end of 1975 or early 1975 I think. I remember when the primary school had grape vines. They were taken out and the place where they were was turned into a soccer field. I'll finish off otherwise I'll rave on for hours but in case they are reading I'd just like to send a quick hello to Shane, Elizabeth and Yvette Noonan (and Mr. and Mrs. Noonan), Trevor "shorty" Griffiths and Ken Henderson. It only seems like yesterday sometimes that I left Merbein. Such happy memories of a fabulous town. |

| We pulled into the resort and unloaded the car. A group of people milled around..an air of importance tangible, I have to say. One of the people noticibly noticed our MERBEIN literature, and stepped forward with a kindly offer of introductions....**** **** he said, firm handshake, broad smile...(dash, I missed it)...Mr Hassleman? I said...this protective looking football groupy stepped forward and in a loud clear voice......corrected me . I was eight when he left town, and then I left town...oh well..I shrugged and left. The next day, I read the S/Daily, and there he was, all over it...Proceeded down the stairs to embark on the day's activities....there he was again....gave him the thumbs up and said...GOTCHYA THIS TIME! We had a laugh anyway... |

On behalf of the Merbein Centenary Committee, I would like to say a very large thank you to all the wonderful messages that have been received on our message board. All your messages have made for fun reading and help create a great interest in all things past in Merbein. Those of you who were able to attend the celebrations, I hope you have taken some great memories home with you to pass on to families and friends. Once again thank you all. Gloria Wall (Treffene) |
